Stetson

John Batterson Stetson developed his famous western hats while gold prospecting in the early 1860's. In 1865, as the Civil War drew to a close, he returned East to start hat manufacturing. Stetson rented a small room at Seventh and Callowhill Streets in Philadelphia. With investment capital of $ loaned to him by his older sister, Louisa, he purchased his tools and fur, and took on two workers. Stetson's first hats were imitations of popular styles of the day.
